Apple Cider Vinegar: This is a truly multi-purpose agent that can help with so many things, including mosquitoes. Add equal parts apple cider vinegar and water to a spray bottle. Use it in areas where mosquitoes tend to hang out. You can even spray it on yourself to keep them away.

Natural Ways To Keep Mosquitoes Out Of Your Yard

Some experts claim that if you regularly consume apple cider vinegar, you will actually change your natural scent and it will repel mosquitoes. Now, I’m not sure how true this is, but it doesn’t hurt to try because apple cider vinegar has a lot of health benefits.

Lavender: Planting lavender in your garden helps ward off mosquitoes and other biting bugs. Not really a fan of the scent. You can also use lavender oil on your skin. Another plant that mosquitoes don’t like is mint! This is easy to grow even if you don’t have a large outdoor space.

Do Citronella Candles Work? Repellents To Try Instead

The terrace or veranda is a great place to sit in the summer. Whether you’re going out for a barbecue or just reading a good book in the fresh air, spring and summer are the perfect time. But all this can be ruined by a swarm of annoying mosquitoes. Who wants to be outside when they eat you alive? There are a number of ways to keep mosquitoes off your patio or porch this season. Some work better than others, but here’s our list!

Mosquitoes need stagnant water to lay their eggs. Larvae live in stagnant water. Therefore, without stagnant water, mosquitoes cannot breed. On the other hand, the presence of stagnant water will not only provide a home for baby mosquitoes, but will also attract adult mosquitoes looking for a place to lay their eggs.

Look around for containers or children’s toys that could collect water and spill it. When not in use, turn containers upside down to prevent rainwater from collecting. Also check your gutters. If your gutters are collecting water, you may need to loosen them or just adjust the angle so that they drain properly.

It’s easy to empty the water that collects on your deck. But if you have standing water below deck, you’re not doing yourself any favors. If water is pooling under your deck, you have several possible solutions. If you have small puddles, you can try putting sand under the deck. Sand absorbs water and prevents mosquitoes from laying eggs in puddles. If you have larger puddles, you may need to install some drainage. A French drain can work well under a deck to clear standing water.

How To Make Homemade Mosquito Repellent

If you have standing water on your deck that you can’t drain, you have other options. One example would be a birdbath. Or maybe a water element. Since you won’t be draining them, you can either make the water flow with a fountain or modify it with mosquito nets or bits. The fountain will circulate the water enough to make it inhospitable to mosquito eggs. Mosquito repellents and bites are products that can be added to stagnant water and release a bacteria that kills mosquito larvae.

If you think you’ve removed all standing water from your deck, there’s one last place to check. Gutters above your deck can hide standing water that you can’t see. If that’s the case, you need to get in there and clean those gutters. Any standing water is an open invitation for mosquitoes and their eggs.

Mosquitoes like still air. In fact, they found it nearly impossible to fly in winds above 2 mph. But you don’t have to wait for a windy day to go outside. Installing an oscillating fan (or two) can make it harder for mosquitoes to fly around your deck or porch. As an added bonus, the fans keep you cool during the hot and sticky Georgia summers.

This one is a bit controversial. But there are plants that are said to repel mosquitoes. Mosquitoes find their prey mostly by smell, so some of these strongly scented plants can help keep them away. Some suggested plants are citronella, mint, rosemary and lemongrass. Make sure the pots you plant them in have proper drainage. The last thing you need is more standing water. Although this method is somewhat suspect, you have nothing to lose by trying it. At least your deck will smell nice!

Mowing the lawn is not just a way to keep the grass clean. It can also help keep mosquitoes away. Mosquitoes tend to rest in tall grass, thick bushes and forests. The more you keep the grass short and the bushes trimmed, the fewer places mosquitoes will have to hide. This is especially important if your yard backs up to woods or a slow-flowing stream. You want mosquitoes to stick to the woods and slow-flowing water and not venture into your well-manicured lawn.

Like planting mosquito-repelling plants, this relies on mosquitoes’ sense of smell. There are vendors that sell special mosquito repellent incense. The smoke is said to be really unpleasant for mosquitoes and will keep them away. We’re not sure how well they work, but it’s worth a try.

Birds and bats are natural predators of mosquitoes. Both birds and bats feed on mosquitoes and can help control mosquito populations in your yard. You can attract birds and bats with feeders or bird and bat houses. Just make sure feeders and houses don’t collect standing water. As usual, anything that increases standing water is not a good way to keep mosquitoes away.

You can use citronella candles or flashlights for localized, short-term mosquito relief. By placing a burning candle on or near the table where you eat, you can keep some mosquitoes away while you eat. This won’t actually reduce the mosquito population, but it may keep them off your face for a while.

Ways To Keep Mosquitoes Off Your Deck Or Porch

One way to use citronella is to go ahead and try to build a citronella wall. Place citronella candles around the perimeter of your deck or porch, about 6 to 8 feet apart. If you have a heavy mosquito presence, you can place them 2 to 3 feet apart. The theory is that this will create a wall of mosquito repellent that mosquitoes won’t cross to get onto your deck. Again, we’re not sure how effective this is, and the smoke could be unpleasant. But if you feel like going to war with the local mosquito population, try it at your own risk.

This won’t actually keep mosquitoes off your deck or porch, but it will keep them away from you. The World Health Organization strongly supports DEET as an effective mosquito repellent. It’s tried and true, used by billions of people since its invention by the US military in 1944. A newer repellent is Picaridin, also recommended by health organizations.

That’s a bit drastic, but if you’re really sick of mosquitoes, it might be worth it. Enclosing the porch with a screen is not the cheapest option. But it can keep mosquitoes and other bugs out of your private space. If you fence your deck, be sure to install screening under the deck floor as well to keep mosquitoes from flying through the space between the deck panels.
