Examples Of Short Bones In The Human Body – Bone, or osseous tissue, is a connective tissue that forms the endoskeleton. It has special cells and a matrix of mineral salts and collagen fibers.

The mineral salt is hydroxyapatite, a mineral made from calcium phosphate. Calcification is the process of deposition of mineral salts on the collagen fiber matrix which dissolves and hardens the tissue. The process of calcification is only in the presence of collagen fibers.

The bones of the skeleton are classified according to their structure: long bones, short bones, flat bones, suture bones, sesamoid bones, and non-skeletal bones (Figure 1).

Long bones are longer than they are wide and have a shaft and two ends. The diaphysis, or midshaft, is where the bone is located in a cavity of the bone. The rounded edges, the epiphyses are covered with articular cartilage and filled with red bone, which produces blood vessels (Figure 2). Most limb bones are long bones—such as the femur, tibia, ulna, and radius. The exceptions to this are the patella and the bones of the wrist and leg.

Short bones, or cuboidal bones, are bones of equal width and length, giving it a box-like shape. For example, the bones of the wrist (carpals) and ankles (tarsals) are short bones (Figure 1).

A flat bone is a thin, wide bone that is found in an area that requires greater muscle control or where muscle attachment is needed. Examples of flat bones include the sternum (breastbone), ribs, scapulae (shoulder blades), and the roof of the head (Figure 1).

Normal bones are bones with complex structures. These bones may be short, flat, thin, or thin. Examples of normal bones are the vertebrae, hip bones, and some skull bones.

Sesamoid bones are small, flat bones that are shaped like a sesame seed. The patellae are sesamoid bones. The sesamoid bones are embedded in the muscles and may be found near the joints in the knees, hands, and feet (see Figure 3).

It is a small, flat, irregular bone. It can be found between the flat bones of the skull. They vary in number, shape, size, and position. The 206 bones that make up the adult skeleton are divided into five categories based on their shape (Figure 6.2.1). Like the structure/function relationships in the body, their structure and functions are related as each type of bone has a different function.

A long bone is a ball-shaped bone that is longer than it is wide. Remember, however, that the term describes the shape of the bone, not its size. Long bones are found in the upper limbs (humerus, ulna, radius) and lower limbs (femur, tibia, fibula), as well as the hands (metacarpals, phalanges) and feet (metatarsals, phalanges). Long bones act as rigid rods that move when muscles contract.

A short bone is a cube-shaped bone that is the same length, width, and thickness. The only short bones in the human skeleton are those in the wrists and ankles. Short bones provide stability and support as well as some limited range of motion.

The term flat bone is a bit of a misnomer because, although the flat bone is thin, it is often thin. Examples are skull bone, rib (shoulder bone), hip bone. Flat bones are sites for muscles and often protect internal organs.

A normal bone is a bone that is not flexible in structure and therefore does not lend itself to any other type of comparison. These bones, like the vertebrae, support the spine and protect it from compressive forces. Many facial bones, especially the jawbones that contain teeth, are classified as non-bones.

The sesamoid bone is a small, round bone that is made up of tusks (sesamo- = “sesame” and -oid = “like”). Tendons are tight connective tissue that connects bones to the muscles and sesamoid bones where most of the pressure is exerted on a joint. The sesamoid bones protect the tendons by helping them to overcome greater forces but also allow the tendons and their associated muscles to function better. The number and placement of sesamoid bones varies from person to person but is usually found in the tendons associated with the feet, hands, and knees. The patellae (singular = patella) are the only sesamoid bones found in humans. Table 6.1 shows the classification of bones with their associated features, functions, and examples.
