Fremont Street is the birthplace of Vegas. The city’s first hotel opened here in 1906, it became the city’s first paved street in 1925, and the first gaming license was issued in 1931 to an establishment in Fremont. Today, Fremont Street offers a very different look than the Strip. bars, old casinos, and more on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. This is a great area for fun, people watching and cheap drinks. The Fremont Street Experience (FSE) on the west side of the street is a pedestrian mall with nightly light shows and street performances.
Las Vegas has some of the best food in the world. With so much money flowing in, it’s easy to see why. Here you can find every type of cuisine and every type of restaurant, from Michelin-starred restaurants to huge, bottomless lunch buffets. A trip here is not complete without at least one fine dining experience. My favorite restaurants are Yellowtail (Bellagio), Lemongrass (Aria) The Peppermill and Firefly.
Completed in 1936, the Hoover Dam is the nation’s largest reservoir. Its massive curved wall towers 726 feet (221 meters) above the ground and holds 9 trillion gallons of water in Lake Mead. It is an amazing feat of engineering and the dam’s hydroelectric generators provide power to Nevada, Arizona and California. The dam is free to visit, but the visitor center, which has exhibits and an observation deck, costs $10. A guided tour of the power plants and dam costs $30.
This outdoor lot is filled with large neon signs that once invited you to casinos like the Silver Slipper, Stardust and El Cortez. The museum has recently expanded and now has more signs, a park and tours of their collection. There are displays for each sign to read about its history and significance in Vegas history. Daytime admission is $20, night tours are $28. This is a very popular attraction and it often sells out, so be sure to book in advance. The museum also offers “Neon Night Flights,” nighttime helicopter tours of Vegas’ neon lights (tickets cost $169 USD, which includes a guided tour and the museum’s light show).

You can combine your trip to the Grand Canyon with a tour of Hoover Dam if you take one of the many coach tours (usually around $85). Since the canyon is not that close to the city, it takes a day. Because they are more than 250 miles (400 kilometers) away (a tour of the Canyon and Hoover Dam can take up to 14 hours). I think the Grand Canyon is worth its own trip, and if it’s the closest you’ll ever get to it, it’s better to hurry than not. With your guide, tours take approximately 10 hours and cost $160 USD.
If possible, rent a car instead. This gives you more flexibility and is cheaper if you split the rent.
As one of the most prestigious marine life centers in the world, the Shark Reef Aquarium is a must-see. Over 2,000 species of sharks, sawfish, giant rays, endangered green sea turtles and rare golden crocodiles come face-to-face. Holding more than 1.3 million gallons, the aquarium’s main tank is one of the largest in North America. The aquarium is located at the Mandalay Bay Resort and tickets cost $29. You have to pay about $39 USD to enter and experience VR.
Offering the best views of Vegas, the Stratosphere is the tallest observation tower in the United States. If you’re feeling brave, try the rides at the top. Specifically, the X-Scream propels you 27 feet over the edge of a tower and hangs 850 feet in the air. Admission to the Sky Pod observation deck costs $20. Adding a Thrill Ride costs $5 USD per ride, while Sky Jumps (think skydiving) start at $139 USD.
