A 550-kilowatt rooftop solar array project is slated to power services across Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada campuses later this year.

Catholic Charities believes it is one of the first nonprofits in Nevada to have a solar project at scale. Nearly one-third of the 7-acre campus’ energy needs will be powered by solar panels upon completion.

Gov. Steve Sisolak toured the project’s most complete, St. Vincent Apartments’ roof, at the corner of Owens Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard North, Monday morning.

“I think it’s a step forward, what they’re doing to protect the environment and protect our people from harm,” he said. “Hopefully this will be an example for other nonprofits to follow.”

The multiservice agency received two grants from NV Energy and the Nevada Governor’s Office of Energy’s low-income solar energy program, or LISEP. The $2 million solar project, developed by Catholic Energies, is part of a larger, $15 million infrastructure project of Catholic Charities. It includes modifications to the lighting and roof, “facelift” of St. Vincent Lied dining room and more.

The solar portion should be completed in the next two months, Deacon Tom Roberts, the organization’s CEO, said. Officials have indicated that they hope all of the organization’s construction projects will be completed by the end of 2022, after facing construction delays due to the coronavirus.

Reforming the school is important because efficiency will help the office to work more efficiently and ultimately provide money in its services, which benefit about 4,000 people every day , Roberts said.

“We need to protect these assets because we all know that with the global epidemic and (economic) problems that people with lower incomes are facing, they are not better off ,” he said. “Therefore, we must be able to care for all of God’s children with value and compassion.”

One of Sisolak’s last public visits to a solar project was in late June, when MGM Resorts International unveiled its 100-megawatt array north of Las Vegas. This flat project has 13 properties and 36,000 hotel rooms.

Sustainable Commercial Exterior, Interior Lighting & Controls

Sisolak said the two investment groups show how large and small projects can benefit. He pointed out how much energy can be produced on clear, sunny days in Clark County.

“It helps (to sell the energy back). When you get a place like this, inefficient, when you get the resources out of the way, you’re going to save a lot of money on your electricity,” Sisolak said. “These non-profit organizations provide important services to our community, taking care of our most vulnerable people. If we can save them money on energy bills, it will help everyone for a long, long time.”
