Many of these chemicals come from additives. Such additives include pigments, fire retardants and more. They make plastics stronger, more colorful and better in some way. But those additives are not sealed in plastic. This means they can move out and into the environment through a process called leaching.

Effects Of Plastic Bottles On The Environment

Most studies of plastic pollution have focused on pure plastic. These are the types that are not added to the ingredients. Both studies used plastic bags and containers as we use them, complete with additives. And through regular use, these plastics can release other chemicals as pollutants, studies show.

The Harmful Effects Of Plastic

“We don’t know if there are any health effects from the plastic chemicals [pollutants] we looked at,” said Martin Wagner, one of the authors. However, he said, people should be concerned. “They are being sold products they use every day without knowing if the chemicals they are exposed to are safe.”

Wagner is a scientist at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. He joined Lisa Zimmermann at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main in Germany. He is an ecotoxicologist. In other words, he studies how chemicals affect toxic substances in the environment. They were part of a team studying whether pollutants from plastics can leach into food.

They check the daily food boxes. These include a variety of bags, bottles, fruit trays, coffee cup lids, gummi-candy containers, slippers and yogurt cups. In these, there are eight different types of plastic. Each used a different combination. The team takes the chemicals from each plastic sample. They also put a portion of each sample in water and kept it in the dark at 40° Celsius (104° Fahrenheit) for 10 days. Next, they test the water for signs of leaching of chemicals from these plastics.

They also tested chemicals extracted and leached from the water in toxicity tests. For example, they look at whether chemicals can damage cells. They also tested whether the chemicals might mimic hormones. And they used a device known as a mass spectrometer (Spek-TRAH-meh-tur) to determine the amount of different chemicals released by the plastics.

The chemicals that are thrown into the water are toxic to the exposure that we encounter under normal use, they know. And every type of plastic is leached at least in some toxic substances. Only a small number of plastics contain chemicals that mimic or interfere with the body’s hormones. In total, several hundreds of chemicals were thrown away. Others, they found, were leached by the tens of thousands.

When plastic bags and products are thrown away, they can end up as trash. The amount of plastic waste in our oceans is increasing. For many years, researchers believed that the sun would simply break down or break down debris into smaller pieces of primitive plastic. Anna Walsh wondered if the sun could dissolve pollutants in water. An environmental scientist, he works at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. It is located in Woods Hole, Mass. His team analyzed common plastic bag parts. These are made from polyethylene (Pah-lee-ETH-ul-een), a plastic that is often found littering the ocean. They cut them into pieces and put them in containers of sea water. Some were left in the dark for six days in the heat. One was left for five days under lights that included all the waves in the sun. These were dried to keep the water at the same temperature as the black samples.

How Plastic Pollution Causes Climate Change

There is more pollution in the sun than in the dark. One bag released 263 different chemicals in the dark but more than 13,000 when exposed to light! Others have more. And the longer the bags are exposed to sunlight, the more chemicals are dissolved. “The sun can drive these rapid changes,” Walsh said. Over the course of weeks to months, they can metabolize “tens of thousands of different chemicals.”

The state of ocean health is unknown, Walsh said. But scientists are doing it. “We are making great strides in understanding how different types of plastic break down in the ocean, how long they last and what the consequences are,” he said.

Chemists have long believed that plastic will last forever in the environment. But the truth is more complicated. “Plastics are very difficult,” Walsh said. “But the sun has the power to break them down into these chemicals that we’ve seen in the study.”

“It’s good to see how many studies use real situations for their knowledge tests,” says Susanne Kühn. He is a biologist at Wageningen Marine Research in the Netherlands. It’s hard, he said, “people are exposed to things that we don’t see in alcohol.”

How We Can Overcome The Growing Plastic Crisis

What’s more, he added, there is no national law to ensure the proper use of these chemicals. Zimmermann’s study “supports the growing body of evidence that plastics can be harmful, not only when they are consumed directly but when they come into contact with human food,” Kühn said.

The good news is, “we can reduce exposure to these chemicals by reducing the use of plastics,” said Wagner in Norway. He recommends eating less food that comes in a plastic bag. “This is not only good for us,” he said, “but also for the environment. bin when you’re done.
