Evangelina Trapero, a longtime resident of Barrio Logan with her family, lives with the consequences of air pollution every day.

“When I touch the leaves of my plants, they always have something black on them. I see the difference where I work in Pacific Beach and the plants there are always clean. There, I open the window and there is no ugly dust. At home, I open the windows and everything is covered in black dust,” said Evangelina.

With limited resources and urgent action needed on climate, the City of San Diego must focus on sources of climate pollution such as heavy duty diesel trucks that produce the super-polluting black carbon. This would maximize public dollars to benefit both the climate and public health.

The black dust that accumulates on surfaces of plants, windows or inside homes is called “black carbon” and it comes from the exhaust of heavy diesel trucks or polluting industries. Black Carbon is a climate pollutant, which is pollution that worsens climate change and has dangerous health effects. Particulate matter (PM2.5), diesel particulate matter (Diesel PM), and ozone are examples of superclimate pollutants.

While Black Carbon only lasts in the air for days or weeks, it is 700 – 1,500 times more powerful at warming the climate compared to carbon dioxide, and another known climate warming gas.

In addition to warming the planet, Black Carbon enters the lungs and major organs of people living directly next to pollution sources causing health effects such as heart disease, lung disease, respiratory problems, asthma and higher rates of cancer.

In addition to having effects on human health, air pollution can also be harmful to our natural environment. Pollutants in the air can be toxic to sensitive plants and trees, while pollutants in rainfall damage habitats by depositing acid or excess nutrients. Water bodies such as rivers and lakes are also sensitive to the effects of air pollution.

The most serious air pollution for our natural environment occurs when reactive nitrogen compounds, such as ammonia and nitrogen oxides, are deposited in sensitive areas. Deposition can be through direct contact between contaminated air and plants. This type of deposition is called “dry deposition” and it mostly occurs near pollution sources.

Deposition also occurs when pollution is dissolved in precipitation (rain and snow) that falls on sensitive areas. We call this “wet deposition” and it can occur at long distances away from the pollution source.

Ammonia is by far the largest contributor to nitrogen deposition and comes from agricultural activities such as livestock, slurry/manure storage and manure spreading and application. More information on ammonia emissions in Northern Ireland can be found here.

Another source of nitrogen deposition is from nitrogen oxides, which are produced by road transport (gasoline and diesel engines) and some types of industry.

Sulfur dioxide is another air pollutant that has harmful effects on vegetation and it is produced by burning fuels, especially coal.

Northern Ireland has 294 Areas of Special Scientific Interest, 54 Special Areas of Conservation and 16 Special Protection Areas that have been designated as needing protection due to the importance of the species and habitats they support. Ammonia can have a direct toxic effect on sensitive vegetation, such as lichen and mosses. Ammonia and nitrogen deposition reduce the richness and diversity of plant species, favoring species that are tolerant to excess nutrients. This leads to changes in plant and animal communities within our habitats and can also alter their ecosystem function. For example, peatlands sequester carbon and are therefore crucial in the fight against climate change. If peatlands are damaged by ammonia and nitrogen deposition, they will not be able to store carbon as effectively.

DAERA monitors the condition of selected sites, and assessments can help identify where air pollution damage is a contributing factor to habitat damage and species loss.

In collaboration with partners UK Center for Ecology and Hydrology, Ulster Wildlife and the National Trust, NIEA’s Air Quality and Biodiversity Unit is delivering a program of monitoring and demonstration work. The work aims to identify and quantify sources of input of atmospheric nitrogen to the NI site network, inform mitigation strategies and assess how these naturally N-poor ecosystems are affected by nitrogen addition.

Ammonia concentrations have been monitored at Ballynahone Bog since September 2014. Ammonia monitoring continues since June 2020 on a further seven SACs (Curran Bog, Garry Bog, Moneygal, Peatlands Park, Sliabh Beagh, Cuilcagh Mountain and Turmennan). At Cuilcagh SAC and Ballynahone Bog, ammonia monitoring is accompanied by wet deposition monitoring. In July 2022, ammonia monitoring was also initiated at Murlough SAC.

Local prevailing wind patterns play a key role in atmospheric nitrogen pollution input to selected sites, in terms of local ammonia concentrations and N deposition originating from local, regional and transboundary sources. Investigate local wind patterns and their temporal variability with locally measured weather data, and analyze these data in conjunction with NH.

As the Statutory Nature Conservancy, NIEA is consulted on planning proposals to identify any potential risks to the natural environment. Through this process, potential effects of air pollution on protected sites can be identified. Standing Advice is available here.
