Conservative gases refer to gases that absorb and emit radiant energies within the infrared thermal range that heat traps in the atmosphere. This phenomenon of capturing solar rays and absorbing infrared rays is known as the greenhouse effect – a word inspired by greenhouses that often support life in the colder months by absorbing radiant energy from the Sun and keeping it inside a glass enclosure. Thus, the greenhouse effect helps our planet stay warmer than it would be without an atmosphere.

To some extent, greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide help the planet by creating a protective layer that holds in heat and does not allow it to escape from our atmosphere. Without greenhouse gases, life cannot exist. The temperature of the planet would drop below 0˚F, creating an inhospitable environment for plants and animals to survive.

Conservative gases affect the planet in different ways, depending on their ability to absorb energy (their “radiative efficiency”) and how long they remain in the atmosphere (their “lifetime”).

To help contribute to global warming of various greenhouse gases, the Global Warming Potential (GWP) measurement was created. Global warming potential measures how much energy the emission of 1 ton of gas absorbs, compared to the emission of 1 ton of carbon dioxide (CO2) over a given period of time, usually 100 years.

The higher the GWP, the more the gas contributes to global warming as CO2 over the same period of time. By creating this common unit of measure, analysts and policymakers can create accurate emissions estimates for various gases and compare carbon emissions and reduction opportunities across different regions.

The preservative gas has been around for longer people’s lives. Part of the reason life was able to flourish on Earth was because the gases warmed enough for plants and animals to thrive. However, if the Earth is too hot or too cold, animal and plant life can be harmed, so those gas preservers must remain at the right atmospheric proportions.

Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, humans have begun to store more gas in the Earth’s atmosphere than is needed to maintain a healthy greenhouse effect. Increased concentrations of greenhouse gases have occurred through activities such as modernized manufacturing, transportation, and agricultural practices. Moreover, our industrial activities to conserve new gases that have only harmed the atmosphere, which has increased the speed of global warming.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most common greenhouse gas, accounting for approximately 75% of all greenhouse gas emissions. CO2 is released into the atmosphere by natural events such as volcanic eruptions, and exhaled when humans breathe.

The problem with carbon dioxide is that the planet has experienced an increase in the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere in the last two hundred years. This increase in CO2 concentration can be traced primarily to the burning of fossil fuels to power factories and vehicles.

Reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and switching to clean energy can help with the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.

Methane occurs naturally through decomposition. As organic matter decomposes, it releases methane into the atmosphere, and this has been a natural process for millions of years.

The increase in methane emissions over the past two centuries stems from human activities such as livestock farming, rice production and decaying organic matter in landfills. Unfortunately, while methane only makes up about 17% of greenhouse gases, it is much more harmful than CO2 as its GWP is about 28 times higher.

Where Do Greenhouse Gas Emissions Come From?

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is another naturally occurring preservative gas that has recently risen out of proportion in the atmosphere due to the burning of fossil fuels. This increase can be attributed to an increase in the use of nitrous oxide in both commercial and organic fertilizers.

While nitrous oxide makes up only 6% of greenhouse gases, it is 265 times as powerful as CO2 when it comes to its ability to warm the planet. That makes it much more harmful to release the gas into the atmosphere, especially when the levels are out of proportion.

We can reduce the amount of nitrous oxide in the atmosphere by reducing our use of fertilizers and fossil fuels.

Industrial gases, or fluorinated gases, are GHGs created solely by human activities. The prime culprits include hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), and nitrogen trifluoride (NF3). Industrial gases are primarily generated by refrigerants, air conditioners, and used in manufacturing.

While these gases currently account for only about 2% of total greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, they are particularly powerful at warming the planet. Industrial gases are thousands more than CO2, and remain in the atmosphere for hundreds (and maybe even thousands) of years because they are not part of our natural environment.

This means that even a small concentration of these chemicals and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere can result in significant effects on global warming. Emissions of these industrial gases increased by 86% in the United States between 1990 and 2019, a trend that was extremely dangerous for the planet.

To counter these numbers, we need to devise methods to contain and remove these artifacts before they enter the atmosphere.

Although water vapor (H2O) and ozone (O3) are technically greenhouse gases, climate scientists are not tracking the numbers because they are typically considered harmful.

Water vapor, technically the most abundant greenhouse gas, only stays in the atmosphere for a couple of days before returning to the ground in the form of precipitation, such as rain or snow.

Ozone is another greenhouse gas that can be beneficial or harmful wherever it is in the air.

Since many GHGs are naturally present in the world at certain levels, climate change can occur when the proportion of those gases in the atmosphere goes out of balance. If the concentration of GHGs in the atmosphere gets too high, it traps too much heat in the earth’s surface, and leads to rising temperatures.

Many scientists believe that human activity is the main cause of greenhouse gas levels. Thus, the excessive use of fossil fuels, the use of industrial fertilizers, and the sub-regulation of manufacturing processes all have an impact on climate change.

The Earth has always had greenhouse gases, and many of the greenhouse gases are naturally occurring and do not harm the planet, as long as they are kept in the proper proportions to preserve our conservation effect.
