Thanks in part to paleoclimatology research, scientists know that atmospheric CO2 levels regulate global temperatures. A quick look at Earth history shows us that when CO2 levels are high, global temperatures are also high, and vice versa. Human-caused climate change follows the same principle: When we pump carbon emissions into the atmosphere, our planet warms.

Once it goes up, it takes a long time to come down. Although other greenhouse gases, such as methane, have a stronger warming potential, CO2 is effective because it remains in the atmosphere for much longer periods of time (usually between 300 and 1,000 years). In other words, our heating problems won’t end the day we stop polluting, but they should at least get worse. The more CO2 accumulates in the atmosphere, the more warming we will see in the long term.

For raw data on historical CO2 concentrations, we used the Antarctic Ice Cores Revised 800KYr CO2 Data (Bereiter et al. 2015) from the World Paleoclimatology Data Center, Boulder, and the NOAA Paleoclimatology Program, accessed May 2020. , 877 – 67, 257 years before present (2020), we replaced newer data from the WAIS Divide Ice Core Marine Isotope Stage 3 CO2 record (Brook 2020) at the US Antarctic Program Data Center. All calculations and methodology are explained here.

CO2 data is reported by NOAA’s Earth System Research Laboratory Global Monitoring Division. Calculations of annual average global temperature are made independently at NASA and NOAA (among other groups). Climate Central combines these and compares temperatures to a baseline from 1881-1910 to assess warming closer to the pre-industrial era. Changes in past atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations can be determined by measuring the composition of air trapped in ice cores in Antarctica. So far the Antarctic Vostok and EPICA Dome C ice cores have provided a composite record of atmospheric carbon dioxide levels over the last 800,000 years.

The carbon cycle is a biogeochemical cycle in which carbon is exchanged between Earth’s oceans, soil, rocks, and biosphere.
