If your current operator offers something to new customers, you may not be able to take advantage of it. Unless you know a simple backdoor trick to not only get your deal but also keep your current phone number…

Okay, let’s say you’re a customer of Network X. Your contract is about to end and you’re looking for something new. The best deal you’ll find is also with the X network, which looks affordable. Except it isn’t. Many chains reserve the best deals for new customers (to entice them to sign contracts). Which means if you want the new deal, you’ll have to cancel your contract and sign up again as a new customer.

Can You Keep Your Phone Number When Switching Carriers

It sounds not bad, except for one small detail: most operators will refuse to transfer an existing number within the network. Basically, this means that when you cancel your contract you will lose your current phone number and then get a new number when you sign up as a ‘new’ customer to get this amazing deal.

How To Change Your Phone Number In Gmail

Losing your phone number is more than an inconvenience. Just think about how many people have your literature. But there is a way you can get the new deal and keep your number too. Let’s be honest, it will take some time, but the savings you get by getting the deal you want can be worth it.

Transferring numbers between operators all the time, it’s transferring them within the same operator is the problem. If you want to cancel your O2 contract and get a new Vodafone contract, porting your old number is pretty easy. And this is going to be your solution here. In basic terms, you’re going to quickly transfer your number to a PAYG SIM on another network and then transfer it back to your new deal with your regular operator. And it really is easier than you think (and it’s going to cost you nothing or just a few pounds if you do it right).

It’s easy to save your phone number. You contact your current operator and request a PAC (Port Authorization Code). You then give the PAC to your new operator and they take care of everything. It’s that easy. And when you’re ready to go back you do the exact same thing. But let’s go through it step by step.

Your first step is to get your PAC from your current operator. You must do this before canceling your current service or contract. It’s as easy as texting PAC to 65075 from your mobile phone. Alternatively, you can also get your PAC by logging into your online account with your mobile operator. You’ll likely find the PAC option under the Settings menu under a heading like ‘Leave Network’ or ‘Switch Networks’:

Port Out Passcode

You should receive your PAC pretty much immediately, and then you’re ready to move on to your next step.

You can now cancel your current contract with your operator. You can do this by logging into your online account as detailed above. However, it will probably be quicker and easier if you call customer service and go through them. It’s really up to you!

It’s unlikely that the cancellation will be immediate (unless you happened to call on the day your billing cycle ends, in which case you might want to cancel at the end of the next billing cycle to give you a few weeks to sort out your new contracts).

If you are sure that your current contract has already ended (ie you have passed the end date), then you do not need to cancel your contract. It will be automatically canceled once you use your PAC with another operator…

Is There A Way To Change This Phone Number ? It Been Inactive For Years.

While you’re waiting for your current contract to be cancelled, you’ll need to sign up for a new PAYG SIM card. The cheapest and easiest way to do this is to sign up with Three or GiffGaff, both of which offer free PAYG cards.

Once you get your new PAYG SIM you can transfer your phone number to it. Again, this is very easy. Go to your new operator’s online account (they are all listed above with links). Find a link in your account that says something like “Swap Service” and follow the steps to bring up an existing number. Some carriers may need you to contact them so you need to have an email form or an address or a phone number you can call. Contact the operator and tell them you want to port your number and give them your PAC and you’re good to go.

You may have to wait a few days for the number change to take effect. In general, transferring a number takes about two working days. You’ll know when your number has been ported because you’ll lose reception and have to reboot your phone, you’ll probably also get an SMS from your new operator.

Once your number has been transferred to your PAYG card, you’re ready to sign up for the new deal. You may want to put some credit into your PAYG SIM to cover you for a few days of mobile use. You should also make sure your old contract with your original operator has ended before signing up for a new one!

How Can I Port My Mobile Number When Switching Providers?

Now you can go ahead and sign up for the amazing deal you found. This should be easy enough, and your old operator should now treat you like a new customer (meaning you can get that deal). You will probably have to wait a little until the contract is activated and you will receive a SIM card.

All you have to do now is transfer your number from that temporary PAYG SIM to your new awesome contract. So repeat the steps above and get your PAC from your PAYG network, then contact the network you signed up with for the new deal and transfer the PAC to them and Bob is your uncle, you’re good to go.

This all sounds like a lot more trouble than it really is. However, there are some important things you should know:

Mobile operators have a legal obligation to give you your PAC when you ask for it. OFCOM is the UK telecoms regulator, and under clause 18 of their general conditions, an operator must provide you with a PAC within 60 seconds of you applying for it electronically (online or by SMS). However, there are three exceptions to this rule. The operator does not have to provide a PAC:

In any of these cases, you won’t be able to get a PAC and therefore won’t be able to port your number. If an operator fails to give you a PAC for any other reason (including failure to meet the ‘minimum period’ for the contract), you can escalate the matter by contacting OFCOM.

It is not easy to transfer a phone number within a network, although there is really no reason to. Chains don’t like to do this because it means existing customers can sign up for deals meant for new customers. However, if you’re willing to spend a little time fixing the problem, the above solution is effective.
