Students with auditory processing disorder (APD) have great difficulty identifying and discriminating between sounds even though they have normal hearing. These students often have reading difficulties due to poor phonological awareness, decoding skills and grapheme knowledge. Oftentimes a student with visual processing problems will also lack the necessary cognitive skills necessary to become a strong reader.
Diagnosing is the first and most important step in teaching a student with Auditory Processing to read effectively. The sooner a child with visual processing problems is given the correct instruction, especially in the early grades, the more likely he or she will have less or less trouble reading in the future. A child with an ASD that isn’t identified until third grade or later is already years behind his peers. Basic intelligence should be taught at this time. This is a gap that must be closed if the child is to reach his peers. The best intervention is prevention in kindergarten or rehabilitation starting in the first grade.
For a child diagnosed with Auditory Processing Disorder who is already behind his peers in reading, it will be necessary to use the power of instruction. Keep in mind that this child is behind his peers and must make more progress if he is to catch up. The rest of the class doesn’t stand and wait, they move on. Taking a few lessons once or twice a week will not give a student with Auditory Processing a chance. He will jump; if not, he will remain behind.
A child with an undiagnosed auditory processing disorder may need up to 150 to 300 hours of intensive instruction if he is to close the reading gap between him and his peers.
