Why Do I Feel Lost In Life
Sometimes it appears that others around us have it all figured out, but I can assure you that things are not always as they seem.
I Feel Lost With Life… I Don’t Know What To Do — The Counseling Hub
While feeling lost can be hard and difficult, it can also be seen as an opportunity to become a new and improved version of yourself.
There’s nothing wrong with feeling lost and alone, the first step to moving forward is to accept how you feel and recognize that you have the power to do something about it. You may not know what that thing is, but you can figure it out a little. Hopefully, some of the tips below will help you along the way.
You are the creator of your reality. When we feel lost and alone, we can feel negative about most things around us – we slip into a victim mentality. You are the only person in control of your thoughts and feelings, so recognize them and learn how you react to them as well as your attitude towards them.
Something as simple as changing your mindset can be very powerful when you feel a little lost.
If You’re Feeling Lost In Life, Ask Yourself These 10 Questions
When we are looking at things negatively, we can sometimes focus on the things we are not good at. Then we can try to spend time getting better at those things. Instead, focus on your strengths and the things you’re good at and work on getting better at them. Not only will it make you feel better, but it will give you a new focus and make you feel good about yourself.
Give up those unhealthy habits – aimlessly scrolling through social media (we’re all guilty of it), eating crap, napping, wasting time doing things that don’t contribute positively to your life. Swap them for healthy habits – get outside more, move your body, eat nutritious foods, read more, write more.
Documenting your thoughts and feelings during this time is very important. I use journaling a lot to help clients on their journey of transformation. It’s a great tool for getting everything out of your head and onto paper – no one judges you for what you’ve written, but it’s also great for tracking your progress.
Spend some time figuring out what you want out of life and why, this might seem like a big task but break it down, use your journal to help you. Think about what things bring you joy and fulfillment, and what you can start doing if you can’t think of anything you already do.
Things To Do If You Are Losing Interest In Everything
Books can change your mindset and outlook on life. They open your eyes to the possibilities of what you can achieve in life if you want to. Reading the right books can guide you in understanding what you want from life.
Here is a list of books I can recommend when trying to understand psychology and the meaning of life.
While journaling, reading, and doing lots of self-discovery work are all wonderful ways to help you feel less lost in life, you also need to take some action.
Go out and do things that make your life feel purposeful and meaningful. Identify what you love to do, what makes you happy and get out of it and do more. Remember, nothing changes if nothing changes!
What To Do When You’re Feeling Lost
Finally, don’t be afraid or embarrassed to ask for help, whether it’s asking your friends or loved ones for a chat about how you’re feeling and how they can help you. Or it might even be enlisting a coach to help guide you through what you think. After all, there are some things you can’t do yourself, and there’s no shame in that.

I’m Carly, I help people who feel lost, stuck or overwhelmed in life find their authentic selves and create a life they truly love. “I feel lost in life. I don’t know what I want and where I’m going. Sometimes it feels like life is passing me by and I’m missing out on something important.”
What To Do When You Feel Lost
Do you recognize yourself in the above? A surprisingly large number of people can relate to this emotional state. We have all felt lost and confused.
But if you experience this feeling on a regular basis, you might want to do something about it before you realize you’ve been wasting your life on the wrong things.
The most obvious reason for feeling lost is that you are disconnected from yourself and don’t know what your purpose in life is.
You just follow a routine, go to work, meet your friends, watch TV, pick up your kids from school. But it all feels incomplete as if something important is missing from our life.
Feeling Lost?: 9 Reasons Why & What To Do About It
Even if you have it all – a job, a family and a circle of friends – it won’t be enough if you don’t know what you live for.
We are here for evolution. Life is constantly evolving. So when you resist change and try to protect yourself from the slightest challenge, you stop growing.
Yes, you may have a nice, comfortable life, but do you ever feel like you’re not really living it? Like it’s passing you by and you’re just an outside observer?
In this case, you may be too deep in your comfort zone because you are bound by insecurities and fears. If you’re too scared to try something new, track down the things you really enjoy. Or you may believe that you are not good enough to succeed.
Reasons You Feel Lost (and How To Find Yourself Again) |6 Min Read
So you play it safe and stay where you are. But in reality this approach will get you nowhere. Sooner or later, you will feel lost and stuck in life.
This is probably the most common reason people feel lost in life. With so many influences from social media, popular culture, and the people around you, it’s easy to lose track and get confused about what you want, especially at a young age.
Modern society imposes certain ideals on us, whether we are aware of it or not. This happens mainly in our childhood and teenage years – the movies we watch, the musicians we listen to and all the other role models we try to be like.
Among others, social conditioning also affects our perception of happiness and success. Some people chase the wrong goals because they believe this is what they want.
Questions To Ask Yourself When You Feel Lost In Life
In reality, however, this is what society wants to do. But these society-imposed ideals of a happy and successful life do not work for everyone.
The people we surround ourselves with have a tremendous impact on our self-perception and mental health. Toxic personalities can easily make you feel lost and confused.
If you’re constantly dealing with criticism, bullying, and emotional invalidation, it’s easy to forget who you are and what you want to achieve.
Perhaps your parents are unreasonably critical and will squash your dreams by saying they are unrealistic and stupid. It could be your friends who make fun of your hobbies and passions.
What To Do When You Feel Lost In Life?
If you have critical, toxic, and manipulative people in your life, it’s no wonder you feel lost and confused.
You can get lost in your life because you are taking on too much. When you’re overwhelmed with responsibilities, you don’t have time for yourself and the things you truly enjoy. You won’t even get a chance to think about it.
When was the last time you did something for yourself? Do you have a hobby that makes you happy and fills you with energy? Or do you no longer have time or energy for hobbies?
Overeating is a way to cognitive overload and emotional burnout. Living a busy lifestyle does not add clarity or meaning to our lives. So if you are juggling multiple responsibilities on a daily basis, it can be a reason to feel lost.
Ways To Find Yourself If You Feel Lost In Life
It is not society as a whole that influences our idea of what we want in life. Our immediate environment has a more significant influence on our perceptions.
As a rule, your parents, teachers or friends sincerely want you to be happy and successful. But they don’t always know what’s best for you – even if they believe they do.
So many people pursue imposed goals
