Niacin is a B vitamin that is available as an over-the-counter (OTC) supplement. A study published in February 2016 in the journal Heart also concluded that niacin increases the risk of developing diabetes.
Certain antipsychotic medications, used to treat schizophrenia and other mental illnesses, can increase your blood sugar levels. “These drugs are usually used for months or years, so this is an issue to be aware of,” Hsieh said.
But a study published in May 2016 in the journal Schizophrenia Bulletin found that among schizophrenia patients with newly diagnosed diabetes, those taking antipsychotics experienced fewer advanced diabetes complications, despite the drug’s potential to increase blood sugar. “A possible explanation is that antipsychotic treatment may improve patients’ physical, psychosocial, and self-care functioning, thereby increasing healthy behavior and reducing the risk of diabetes complications,” the authors wrote.
A group of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones, which are used to treat illnesses such as pneumonia and urinary tract infections (UTIs), have been shown to cause both dangerously low and high blood sugar, according to a study published in October 2013 in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases. Additionally, pentamidine, an antimicrobial drug used to treat certain types of pneumonia, can also cause a rise in blood sugar.

If a specialist, such as an orthopedist or psychiatrist, prescribes a new medication, consult with a certified diabetes educator or your primary care doctor to ensure that you are OK to take it and coordinate any necessary adjustments to your diabetes medications, Hsieh says.
