God gave the 10 Commandments from Mount Sinai, accompanied by smoke, earthquakes and trumpets to emphasize the importance of these laws. Moses recorded God’s words in Exodus 20 and recounted the event again in Deuteronomy 5. There are only slight differences of emphasis in the accounts. Both versions are listed below, along with a list of the commands in short form.

The Ten Commandments

The numbering of the commandments in the first three lists below reflects the numbering used in much of the Christian world, although Catholics, Jews and others use various numbering systems (as shown below).

Moses repeated the 10 Commandments after the 40 years of wandering in the desert. There are only a few changes in the wording of Exodus 20. These minor differences are found in the Fourth, Fifth and 10th Commandments.

Commandment says: “You shall not make for yourself an idol, either in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or on the earth below, or in the water under the earth” (v. 4), and the Catholics abolished it.

This is partly true. But then, do they have the authority to do this? If we want to explain this question, it is necessary to study the history of the commandments.

The book of Exodus tells that, being free from slavery in Egypt, the people of Israel walked for three months through the desert until they arrived at the foot of Mount Sinai. Moses climbed to the top, where the Lord appeared to him, and in the midst of thunder, earthquake, fire and sound of trumpets, gave him the orders.

The Ten Commandments: God’s Guide To Relationships

The Bible clearly teaches that the commandments are ten (Dt 4:13; 10:4). But here is the first difficulty: they are not listed. And when we count them, they seem not ten, but twelve commandments. These are:

If the Bible indicates that the commandments are ten, how do we count them to reach this number? The Jews and the Christians discussed that from antiquity, and they proposed various modes of counting them.

The first explanations were from the Jew, Philon of Alexandria and the historian, Josephus Flavius, both from the 1st.

What Are The Ten Commandments Of God?

This classification distinguished four commandments for God and six for the neighbor, and was accepted by the various old Christian writers, like Origen, Tertullian and San Gregorio Nazianzen. It is also accepted by the Lutheran, Calvinist and Anglican Protestants.

But, official Judaism did not accept it. When the rabbis wrote the Talmud, their holy book, they proposed another way of counting them. They considered v. 2, not as a command but the prologue or presentation of the Decalogue. They considered “I, the Lord, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery” as the 1

Order, they combined the following three: the prohibition to have other gods, the fabrication of images, and to bow down to them (v. 3-5). The 3

All the Jews adopted this second division, also of four commandments concerning God and six concerning men.

Moses And The 10 Commandments

Century Saint Augustine, one of the main doctors of the Church, proposed a third division of the orders. Similarly with the rabbis of the Talmud, he affirmed that the precepts of not having other gods, not making images, and not bowing down to them, were in reality one command told in various ways. They referred to one and the same thing: avoiding idolatry or the worship of false gods. For this he understood that the three must be united (vv. 2-6) in one commandment. But this was not to be the 2

. But by adding the first commandments, the list lacked one to complete the ten. So he shared the 9

About the neighbor’s goods. He was the first to propose two separate commands in this verse.

Augustine’s new classification recognized only three commandments focusing on God and seven on neighbor. According to him, the reason was purposeful. The three precepts referring to God served better to emphasize the Holy Trinity.

This third way of dividing the commandments was followed by almost all Christian theologians and medieval scholars, and was later decided as the official list by the Roman Catholic Church.

Century, when popular teaching of catechism began, it was necessary for people to memorize the Ten Commandments as their examination of conscience for confession and as an aid to spiritual life. But the translation did not lend itself to that. The Ten Commandments belonged to an era when the Israelites had a primitive moral standard. They did not include the progress flowing from revelation in the life and teachings of Jesus. For example, the Decalogue mentioned “other gods” because the Hebrews believed that other deities really existed for other nations; but today we know that only one God exists for all religions. The Decalogue forbade having images but in the New Testament, Christ was described as the image of the invisible God (Col 1:15). Therefore, it is lawful for Christians to express their faith through images. It also ordered to sanctify Saturday, while Christians remember Sunday as the day of salvation, when Christ returned from the dead.

The Church, therefore, decided to draw up a new Decalogue for the catechism. Our guide was improved with Christ who surpassed the Old Testament. In the same way, the Christian life went beyond the sacrifice of animals in the Old Testament: the beheading of sheep, the burning of heifers and the bloody slaughter of lambs in the Temple.

Command suppressed the other gods and was formulated in a positive and more perfect way: “Love God above all.”

, the images were removed because its meaning was the same as the previous one: not to fall into the cult of things that would replace God. Its place was replaced by the next commandment not to take God’s name in vain.

, to sanctify a day of the week in memory of the Lord was modified. Instead of Saturday, Sunday was chosen to celebrate the day of Christ’s resurrection.

Forbade adultery, that is taking a married woman. But union with a single woman was not forbidden. The Church converted this to a deeper and more demanding prohibition: “not to commit fornication”, which is a prohibition to have relations with any woman outside of marriage.

, “do not rob”, in the Hebrew language referred to the sequestration of a person. It became more generic, “do not steal” which included any kind of property.

Question 8: What Is The Law Of God Stated In The Ten Commandments?

Referred exclusively to not giving false testimony in trials. To it was added “neither lie” to adapt it to any other circumstance in life.

Who ordered not to desire a woman nor the other property of the neighbor was divided into two: the 9

In this way, the Church reestablished the 10 commandments, so that they remain prominent in the new Christian morality. That is why the list of commandments from the Bible does not coincide with what we were taught in the catechism.

Can the Church change the Ten Commandments? To answer this question, it is necessary to see how the Ten Commandments appeared among the people of Israel. The Bible says that Moses received them on the
