This week we have even more information on how climate change threatens human health.

The US Global Change Research Program has just released its latest report – Climate Change Impacts on Human Health in the United States. This scientific assessment is the culmination of three years of work by hundreds of experts and builds on the more general National Climate Assessment released in 2014.

Impacts Of Climate Change

Scientists have known for decades that climate change threatens human health through excessive heat, degraded air quality, water-related diseases, food safety, diseases carried by pests such as fleas and mosquitoes, and mental stress. The new report thoroughly characterizes our current understanding of these impacts.

As scientific understanding has advanced significantly in recent years, the authors also reviewed new information and findings from several recent scientific, peer-reviewed publications and other publicly available sources.

For example, the new data revealed that ragweed season grew by as much as 27 days in the central US from 1995 to 2011, and Lyme disease incidence in the Northeast doubled from 2001 to 2014, both in line with warming trends.

Recent modeling studies have also improved quantification estimates and confidence in predicted health outcomes from climate change. By mid-century, scientists predict there will be thousands more ground-level ozone (smog)-related illnesses and premature deaths, and a 500% increase in the number of very large fire risk weeks in most of the western US. By the end of the century, scientists predict an additional 27,000 summer heat-related deaths in more than 200 American cities (currently home to 160 million people) and the development of harmful algae-producing toxins. two months earlier and last up to two months longer.

Through climate and weather changes and the disruption of ecosystems and social systems, here are the main concerns about the impacts of climate change on human health:

Overall, the report is a sobering portrait of the risks we face from climate change – and underlines the urgency of climate action.

Although we often think of human-induced climate change as something that will happen in the future, it is an ongoing process. Ecosystems and communities in the United States and around the world are being affected today.

Un Draft Climate Report: Impacts On Nature

Global temperatures rose 1.98°F outside the junction (1.1°C) from 1901 to 2020, but climate change means more than just temperature increases. It also includes sea level rise, changes in weather patterns such as droughts and floods, and much more. The things we depend on and value—water, energy, transportation, wildlife, agriculture, ecosystems, and human health—are experiencing the effects of a changing climate.

The impacts of climate change on different sectors of society are interrelated. Drought can harm food production and human health. Flooding can lead to the spread of disease and damage to ecosystems and infrastructure. Human health problems can increase mortality, affect food availability, and reduce worker productivity. The impacts of climate change can be seen in every aspect of the world we live in. However, the impacts of climate change are uneven across the country and the world – even within a single community, the impacts of climate change can vary between neighborhoods or individuals. Long-term socioeconomic inequalities can make underserved groups, who are often most at risk and have the fewest resources to respond, more vulnerable.

Projections of a future affected by climate change are not inevitable. Many of the problems and solutions outside the pages are already known to us, and ongoing research continues to provide new ones. Experts believe there is still time to avoid the worst outcomes by limiting off-site warming and reducing emissions to zero as quickly as possible. Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions will require investment in new technologies and infrastructure to support job growth. In addition, reducing emissions will reduce harmful impacts on human health, saving countless lives and billions of dollars in health-related expenditures.

Levels of the two most important anthropogenic greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide and methane, continued their unabated growth in 2020 despite the economic slowdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic response.

We see how climate change is affecting our planet from pole to pole. tracks global climate data and here are some of the recorded changes. You can explore more on the Global Climate Dashboard.

Flooding is an increasing problem as our climate changes. Compared to the early 20th century, most of the United States is experiencing stronger and more frequent extremely heavy precipitation events.

Conversely, drought is also becoming more common, especially in the western United States. People use more water, especially for agriculture. Just as we sweat more when it’s hot outside, warmer air temperatures cause plants to lose or release more water, which means farmers have to supply them with more water. Both highlight the need for more water in places where supplies are dwindling.

Snowpack is an important source of fresh water for many people. As the snow melts, fresh water becomes available for use, especially in areas such as the western United States where there is not much precipitation in the warmer months. But as temperatures warm, there is less snow overall and snow starts to melt earlier in the year, meaning the snowpack may not be a reliable source of water for the entire warm, dry season.

The Redlands Mesa area near Hotchkiss, Colorado is particularly vulnerable to wildfires, but with funding from the Environmental Literacy Program, local high school students are taking steps to address their community’s vulnerability to the hazard.

Our food supply depends on climate and weather conditions. Although farmers and researchers may be able to adapt some agricultural techniques and technologies or develop new ones, some changes will be difficult to manage. Increased temperatures, drought and water stress, disease and extreme weather present challenges for the farmers and ranchers who put food on our tables.

Human farmers can suffer from heat-related health problems such as exhaustion, heatstroke, and heart attacks. Rising temperatures and heat stress can also harm livestock.

What Is The Impact Of Climate Change On Agriculture

Climate change is already affecting human health. Changes in weather and climate can threaten lives. Heat is one of the most dangerous weather phenomena. As ocean temperatures rise, hurricanes become stronger and wetter, which can cause both direct and indirect deaths. Dry conditions lead to more fires, which bring many health risks. Increased flooding can lead to the spread of water-borne diseases, injuries and chemical hazards. As the geographic ranges of mosquitoes and ticks expand, they can carry diseases to new locations.

The Impact Of Climate Change On Africa’s Economies

The most vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, people with pre-existing health conditions, outdoor workers, people of color, and people with low incomes, are at even greater risk due to factors related to climate change. However, public health groups can work with local communities to help people understand and build resilience to the health impacts of climate change.

Examples of populations at higher risk of exposure to climate-related adverse health threats are provided, along with adaptation measures that can help address disproportionate impacts. Considering the full range of threats from climate change and other environmental exposures, these groups are among the most exposed, most vulnerable, and have the fewest individual and community resources to prepare for and respond to health threats. White text indicates the risks these communities face, while dark text indicates measures that can be taken to reduce these risks. (EPA (National Climate Assessment))

French fries depend on potatoes, and like all crops, potatoes have a preferred climate. How long will America’s favorite side dish have a safe place on our menu?

Climate change will continue to have significant impacts on ecosystems and organisms, although they will not be affected equally. The Arctic is one of the ecosystems most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, as it is warming at least twice as fast as the global average, and off-site melting ice sheets and off-site melting of glaciers contribute dramatically to global sea level rise.
