What Is Methylmercury And How Is It Formed?

Mercury (Hg) is considered one of the most common toxic environmental pollutants, which appears to have multiple effects on organisms even at low concentrations. It plays a critical role in many health problems with harmful consequences, with mercury primarily targeting the brain and its components such as the central nervous system (CNS). Hg exposure has been associated with multiple CNS disorders, often leading to Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Patients with AD have higher concentrations of mercury in blood and brain tissue. This article aims to highlight the correlation between Hg and AD based on the known occupational literature. The result shows that all these interesting elements can be attributed to Hg. However, recent studies have not investigated the molecular level of mercury exposure in AD. This review highlights the interplay between Hg and AD in neuronal degenerations, apoptosis, autophagy, oxidative stress (OS), mitochondrial dysfunction, gastrointestinal (GI) microflora, infertility and altered gene expression.
Hg was used several thousand years ago by the Chinese to make red ink from cinnabar . In addition, Hg has been found in Egyptian tombs, used as a preservative or to ward off evil spirits. In ancient times, it was believed that mercury prolongs life and supports health, in contrast to the modern state of knowledge about the properties of this element.
Since the early 19th century, mercury has been used to produce amalgams with other metals such as silver and gold. Additionally, methylmercury (MeHg) and ethylmercury (EtHg) are still used in various vaccines . To date, Hg is considered one of the most toxic common environmental pollutants, which even at low concentrations has a variety of effects on the body [3, 4, 5].
Mercury Pollution And The Impact On Health In The Caribbean
Exposure to Hg can occur from both natural and man-made sources. Mercury can enter ecosystems through anthropogenic activities, including fossil fuel combustion, the chlor-alkali industry, mining, and the use of coal and oil, which can lead to Hg exposure. Natural sources of this element are volcanic activity, erosion, evaporation of mercury present in the marine environment, forest fires, and biomass burning [6, 7].
The city of Minamata is world famous for “Minamata disease”, a neurological disorder caused by ingestion of MeHg via contaminated food. It was an environmental disaster and massive Hg poisoning caused by irresponsible industrial disposal of chemicals in Minamata Bay. The route of exposure to MeHg was through the consumption of contaminated fish and shellfish, the main food sources for the local population.
