What Does Vitamin D3 Do For Men – Vitamin D plays many important roles in human health beyond the regulation of calcium and phosphorus for bone health. It has been shown to have effects on cancer, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune health and pregnancy health. It makes sense that the demand for vitamin D can be different between men and women, and that the status of vitamin D can be affected by gender.
A recent study by Muscogiuri et al. included 500 Caucasian adults living in Naples, Italy. Participants were evenly divided by gender and 5 body mass index (BMI) categories (50 females and 50 males in each category). All participants had similar sun exposure habits, and none of the participants took vitamin D supplements. The researchers compared vitamin D levels between genders and BMI category. They found that vitamin D levels were significantly higher in males than in females in all BMI groups, with a trend toward a higher percentage of females with vitamin D deficiency, defined as <20 ng /ml (<50 nmol/L). As expected, they also found a trend towards lower levels of vitamin D with a higher BMI.

Vitamins like D3 tend to bring a lot of questions. What exactly is vitamin D3? How is vitamin D3 different from normal vitamin D? Where do you get vitamin D3? And what is the difference between D&D and D3? (The latter is easy: the former is an immersive experience game.) As for the rest? Let’s start with the basics.
“Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is a nutrient that is made in the body when the skin is exposed to the sun. It can also be found in animal meat, fish oil and fortified foods,” says Kim Yawitz, registered dietitian and gym owner in St. Louis, Mo.
Vitamin D3 is best known for strengthening your bones, which helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus from food, says Yawitz. “But it also reduces inflammation, boosts the immune system, promotes heart health, and serves other important functions in the body,” he says.
While some nutrients have a “recommended dietary allowance” (RDA), there is no set guideline for vitamin D3, specifically, Yawitz says. It says: “Men should aim for 600 international units (IU) of vitamin D per day, which can come from vitamin D2, vitamin D3, or a combination of the two,” he says.
Does Vitamin D Deficiency Pose A Special Risk For Black People?
Because D3 is more easily absorbed than D2, it also stays in the body longer than D2. “And so, you may be able to get a little more bang for your buck by choosing foods that are naturally rich in vitamin D3,” says Yawitz.
Before we dive into the signs of vitamin D3 deficiencies, the best sources of vitamin D3, and more, there’s one more important thing to keep in mind: “Vitamin D3 is fat-soluble, which means you can boost its absorption to take. with foods that have some healthy fat,” says Yawitz, adding that this is especially true for supplements and can also be beneficial for food sources of D3 that are naturally low in fat.
However, most Americans do not get enough vitamin D. “By some estimates, more than 90 percent of American men do not get enough vitamin D in their diet. But this does not mean necessarily that they are lacking,” says Yawitz. “Your body produces vitamin D3 when your skin is exposed to the sun. So even if you don’t eat a lot of foods that are naturally high in D3, your D levels could be good if you regularly spend even a few minutes in direct sunlight.”
And a real deficiency of vitamin D3 can be difficult to identify, simply because there are not many easy to spot symptoms. “Severe deficiency can lead to osteomalacia – a condition that causes weak and painful bones and sometimes dental problems,” he says.

“A large study also found that people with low levels of vitamin D are more likely to experience depression. However, depression alone is not a good indicator of low vitamin D3 status.”
“A vitamin D3 supplement might be beneficial if you’re vegan or lactose intolerant, if you have dark skin, if you don’t get a lot of sun, or if you have certain medical conditions,” says Yawitz. “That said, it’s always best to talk to your doctor before starting any supplement.”
As she points out, taking high doses of vitamin D3 can lead to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle weakness, dehydration, kidney stones, kidney failure, irregular heartbeats and other health problems. Again, talking with a medical professional can help you determine if a vitamin D3 supplement may be right for you.
