What Causes Dizziness And Loss Of Balance – Balance Awareness Week is September 15-21, 2019, designated by the Vestibular Disorders Association (VeDA) to raise awareness of vestibular disorders and support patients on their journey to regain balance.

Audiologists, like Daniel Dorner, AUD, a vestibular disorder specialist with Associated Audiologists, play a key role in helping diagnose and manage vestibular and balance disorders. Unfortunately, dizziness and balance problems are extremely difficult to diagnose. The average vertigo patient sees seven health care professionals before receiving an accurate diagnosis.

Can Vision Problems Cause Dizziness?

Dr. Dorner’s background and experience make her uniquely qualified to diagnose and treat dizziness and balance disorders. She has extensive training in vestibular disorders. She is also a doctorate level audiologist. Using sophisticated technology, she can diagnose vestibular disorders and, if necessary, make a referral to a medical specialist. However, in most cases, Dr. Dorner can diagnose and treat the disease.

Dizziness and balance disorders are not only bothersome to many patients, but also put the individual at greater risk of falling. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control, falls are the number one cause of injury and death among older Americans. In the year In 2014 alone, older Americans experienced 29 million falls, resulting in seven million injuries and $31 billion in annual Medicare costs. Often, falls are caused by dizziness or balance disorders, such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). With proper diagnosis and treatment by a specialist in vestibular disorders, these conditions can be successfully treated.

Causes include medical conditions and medications.

However, if a person has a disease affecting the brain or inner ear, they may experience loss of balance, dizziness, unsteadiness, headaches, or dizziness.

What Causes Dizziness And Loss Of Balance

Loss of balance can occur for a variety of reasons, such as ear infections, head injuries, medications, and neurological disorders.

Balance And Dizziness

The labrum, or vestibular system, is a structure in the inner ear that helps people balance.

If the laboratory is contaminated or burned, it can reduce balance and damage hearing. People may also feel dizzy and nauseous.

Meniere’s disease affects the inner ear. Fluid builds up in the inner ear, making it harder for signals to reach the brain.

Cervical Vertigo: Causes, Symptoms, And Treatments

This disruption affects a person’s ability to reason and hear. If people have Meniere’s disease, they may feel dizzy and have ringing in their ears.

Vertigo is a symptom of various conditions, and is often accompanied by loss of balance. There are two main types of spines:

People with benign paroxysmal postpositional vertigo (BPPV), or positional vertigo, feel dizzy when they turn their head a certain way.

What Causes Dizziness And Loss Of Balance

BPPV occurs when calcium carbonate crystals in the ear become dislodged and enter the seminal canal of the inner ear.

Why Doctors Dismiss Dizziness

Semicircular canals use fluid to sense head movement. The loose crystals obstruct the movement of the fluid, and the inner ear begins to send incorrect signals to the brain about the position of the head, which causes dizziness.

Lightheadedness is also called presyncope. People may feel as if they are about to pass out, but consciousness does not.

If people have frequent headaches for no apparent reason, they may want to talk to a doctor about diagnosing the underlying cause.

Some medicines can cause balance as a side effect by affecting the inner ear or vision, making people feel lightheaded or sleepy.

Ménière Disease: What Is It, Causes, Signs And Symptoms, And More

Vestibular neuronitis is an inner ear infection that can cause dizziness and loss of balance. It can occur when the vestibular nerve in the inner ear becomes infected or inflamed due to viruses such as influenza.

A perilymph fistula is a condition where a small hole between the inner ear and the middle ear causes fluid to enter the middle ear.

A fistula can be caused by a head injury, chronic ear infection, or severe changes in air pressure.

If a person has been on a boat or running on a treadmill for too long, they may develop Mal de Debarquement Syndrome (MdDS).

Causes Of Dizziness & Balance Problems

In MDDS, people experience a sensation of moving or swaying even when they are not on moving ground. They may also feel drowsy and find it difficult to concentrate.

MDS usually goes away soon after the person returns to land, but symptoms can sometimes last longer.

An acoustic neuroma, or vestibular schwannoma, is a noncancerous tumor that presses on the nerves of the inner ear, affecting balance and hearing.

Acoustic neuromas can make people sedated or dizzy and lead to hearing loss or ringing in the ears.

Vestibular And Non Vestibular Causes Of Dizziness

If a person experiences loss of balance and coordination with the following symptoms, it may be a sign of stoke.

Anyone who thinks they or someone close to them is having a stroke should call 911 and get emergency medical help. Symptoms include:

People who experience imbalance may feel as if they are moving while standing. They may feel unsteady on their feet or feel that the space around them is spinning.

What Causes Dizziness And Loss Of Balance

If a person loses balance with the above symptoms, he should see a doctor.

Causes Of Dizziness In Children, Care, And Treatment

A doctor may refer a person to an audiologist or otolaryngologist, who deals with hearing and affects the ear, nose, and throat.

If a certain drug causes a decrease in balance, the doctor can reduce the dose of the drug or prescribe alternative options.

People can use the Epely maneuver to treat BPPV. The Epely maneuver is a set of maneuvers aimed at dislodging the crystals from the seminal canal and returning them to their proper location. A doctor teaches a person how to do these activities.

If a person has an ear infection that causes them to lose weight, the doctor may prescribe antibiotics or antiviral drugs.

Dizziness And Balance Problems In Kids

To treat Meniere’s disease, a doctor may prescribe medication to treat nausea and dizziness. Applying a needle or ear pressure pulse may also help.

People with Ménière’s disease can make lifestyle changes to reduce their symptoms, such as quitting smoking and cutting back on salt, alcohol, and caffeine. If these treatments do not help, surgery may be an option.

If people feel light-headed due to a triggering event such as the sight of blood, they can avoid fainting in the following ways.
