What Are The Major Functions Of The Liver – Before we get into the fascinating ways amino acids benefit liver health, let’s talk about the consequences of not paying attention to liver health.
There are more than 4.9 million people diagnosed with chronic liver disease in the United States, based on statistics shared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Of these cases, 40,545 will die.

What Are The Major Functions Of The Liver
According to the American Liver Foundation, “Anything that interferes with your liver’s ability to function can be life-threatening.” There are many different things that can interfere with liver function, such as…
Liver Function Tests: Purpose, Procedure, And Results
Regardless of the cause, the main risk is the same: that your liver will be damaged so much that it cannot function at the level necessary to keep you alive. And no matter what the cause, liver damage and disease begin to progress in a well-known way.
One of the things that promote the development of liver disease is that the protein called Bcl-xl begins to work properly, failing to control the release of a second protein called cytochrome C, which occurs when liver cells die.
The release of cytochrome C causes inflammation of the liver that causes liver damage – what medical experts call “hepatic fibrosis” – and leads to the development of chronic liver disease.
In terms of uncovering ways to prevent liver disease and protect liver health, finding ways to ensure that the Bcl-xl protein effectively activates cytochrome C is of great importance. And exciting new research shows that branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) can do just that.

To understand how amino acids protect your liver, it is important to understand how the liver processes amino acids.
Did you know that your liver is the largest organ in your body? Therefore, it is not surprising how many important functions the liver performs. Not only does your liver remove toxins from your blood, it also processes nutrients and produces lipids, carbohydrates, and amino acids.
Your liver produces various proteins, such as albumin and fibrinogen, two major proteins in the blood that carry out many important functions. Albumin keeps your blood healthy and carries essential amino acids throughout the body, while fibrinogen makes sure your blood clots properly.
One of the main functions of the liver is to process the amino acids that your body absorbs through the protein mill. Your liver uses enzymes called deaminase and transaminase to convert amino acids into forms that are more useful for your body.
Mudpies And Make Up: Science
Deaminase and transaminase enzymes can add nitrogen to form non-essential amino acids, or remove nitrogen to leave carbon compounds that can be used to make sugars or, at least, turn them into fatty acids.
When these processes involve releasing nitrogen, a potentially toxic substance called ammonia is produced. Your liver converts ammonia into urea, allowing it to be efficiently removed from your body.
Long-term abuse of alcohol or other drugs and poor nutrition can impair your liver’s ability to perform these important functions. Changes in amino acid metabolism are one of the symptoms of liver disease, and research shows that supplementing with amino acids—and BCAAs in particular—can improve the health of your liver.
Another very interesting study on how amino acids benefit liver health was conducted by a group of scientists based in Kyoto, Japan. The team concluded that BCAA supplementation could slow, or possibly stop, the progression of chronic liver disease.

After causing liver disease in a group of rats, the researchers divided the rats into two groups. One group received a diet supplemented with three BCAAs: valine, leucine, and isoleucine. The other was the control group. During the 11-week study, weekly blood samples were taken from all groups of rats. At the end of the study, the researchers took liver samples.
The results of BCAA supplementation were very impressive. Blood levels of a liver enzyme called AST, which increases as liver damage progresses, were about 22% lower in the group given BCAAs than the control group. And CTGF protein levels, a marker of liver damage, were about 75% higher in the control group.
Perhaps most important of all, the levels of an enzyme called caspase 3 and a protein called albumin, which indicates that cells are dying, were 100% and 80% higher in the control group.
Based on these changes, the researchers concluded that: “Supplementation with branched amino acids slows down the spread of chronic liver disease” and does so mainly by reducing the death of liver cells.
Liver Damage From Medication—early Signs And Drug Types
Of course, mortality rates from liver disease in the United States are rising, according to an analysis of data collected across the country. The main author Zobair M. Younossi, MD, MPH, says that this is mainly a spike in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
“I believe that all of this is related to the significant increase in obesity and type 2 diabetes in this country,” Dr. Younossi said in an interview ahead of the annual meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. “Two risk factors drive NAFLD and its sequelae, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). These factors contribute to increased mortality from liver disease.”
Dr. Younossi and colleagues analyzed data from 838,809 deaths related to liver disease. They found that the number of people dying from chronic liver disease increased by 1.3% in men and 2.5% in women.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease was the leading cause of death from liver disease (34.7%), followed by alcoholic liver disease (28.8%) and hepatitis C (21.1%). Between 2007 and 2016, deaths caused by NAFLD increased from 7.6 to 9.0 per 100,000.
Metabolic Functions Of The Liver
One of the most important aspects of the analysis, Dr. NASH—the most severe form of NAFLD—is more common in the United States, Younossi said. “These patients are underdiagnosed and underdiagnosed because they are asymptomatic.” But fatty liver disease can progress to severe cirrhosis. Younossi believes it is important to identify treatments that can help combat the disease.
Human studies have proven that amino acid supplementation can naturally and effectively treat non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and alcoholic liver disease, which lead to liver death due to liver disease.
Clinical studies have found that essential amino acids reduce liver fat as effectively as fenofibrate, the most advanced treatment. And the amino acids that caused it are not bad. Fenofibrate, on the other hand, can cause unpleasant side effects such as fever, hives and other skin rashes, muscle aches and pains, abdominal pain, and vomiting.
Scientists are still working to understand the metabolic changes that cause fat to accumulate in the liver, which disrupts liver function and causes damage and disease. Most people don’t show early symptoms of fatty liver, but some warning signs include:
Endocrine Related Organs And Hormones
It is possible to reduce the damage associated with fatty liver disease, and in some cases, to completely eliminate it. Nutritional therapies that support fat metabolism in the liver, such as essential amino acids, may go a long way toward protecting or restoring liver health.
L-glutamine for leaky gut syndrome is touted by many as one of the best ways to treat and prevent the symptoms of this condition. But does it really work? Let’s find out.
Identify the chemical differences between acids and amino acids. Learn about the structure of amino acids, the differences between acidic and basic substances, the pH scale used to measure them, and why these differences are important.
