Signs And Symptoms Of High Sugar Levels – Diabetic ketoacidosis, also known as DKA, is when there is a severe lack of insulin in the body. This means that the body cannot use sugar for energy, and starts using fat. When this happens, chemicals called ketones are released. If left unchecked, ketones can build up and make your blood more acidic – hence the name acidosis.
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious condition that affects people with type 1, and sometimes those with type 2 (although it is more likely to affect the Hyperosmolar Hyperglycaemic State (HHS)).

Signs And Symptoms Of High Sugar Levels
Some children and adults who don’t know they have type 1 aren’t diagnosed until they’re very sick with DKA. It is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of DKA and get prompt treatment.
Diabetes And Its Effect On Different Parts Of The Body
DKA is serious if not treated quickly so these are some of the warning signs that need to be looked out for. Share this information with friends, relatives or anyone who cares for children, such as teachers and babysitters. This is to enable them to recognize the symptoms of DKA, too.
Here Kate tells us about when her son Llewis became seriously ill with DKA and was diagnosed with type 1 shortly after.
Although it is more common in people with type 1, people with type 2 can sometimes develop DKA. If you have high blood sugar levels and experience any of the following symptoms it is very important to get immediate medical help.
In her video Kate mentions the 4T’s which are the four most common signs of type 1. They are:
What Is Type 1 Diabetes And Its Signs, Symptoms And Treatment
Early symptoms of DKA can be treated with extra insulin and fluids if taken quickly. But if not, DKA requires hospital treatment and can be life-threatening.
These symptoms are sometimes called a ‘diabetic attack’, but this can also refer to other things, such as hypoglycaemia. You may see these symptoms develop over 24 hours, but they can come on quickly, especially in children or if you use a pump. If you see any of these symptoms it is a sign that you need to get medical help quickly.
If your blood sugar is high, check for ketones. You can check your blood or urine for ketones. A blood test will show your ketone levels in real time but a urine test will show what they were a few hours ago.
If you have type 1 you should get a free blood ketone monitor or urine test strips from the NHS. If you have high ketone levels in your blood and suspect DKA, you should get medical help right away.
Signs And Symptoms Of High Blood Sugar (hyperglycemia)
DKA is serious and should be treated immediately in hospital. If left untreated, it can lead to a life-threatening condition.
You will also be monitored closely to make sure there are no serious problems with your brain, kidneys or lungs.
You will be able to leave the hospital once you are eating and drinking well and the labs show a safe level of ketones in your body.
You can help prevent DKA by regularly monitoring your blood sugar levels and changing your insulin dose in response to your blood sugar levels and what you eat.
Handling High And Low Blood Sugar Levels For A Child With Type 1 Diabetes
Your blood sugar levels may be higher than normal when you are sick. Therefore, it is a good idea to work with your health care team to come up with some sick day rules when you are sick. You may need to drink more fluids, take more insulin and check your blood sugar more often than usual. The amount of extra insulin needed will vary from person to person. Your team will help you find the right dose for you (or your child).
“The experience [of having DKA] taught me that it’s very important to listen to your body, it doesn’t matter how many HCPs you visit, whether it’s a GP or a specialist or a family friend who works in the field, you know. your body and You know what’s right and what’s not. When it comes down to it, it’s important to trust your instincts. Amber, 21, had DKA What causes DKA?
For some people, getting DKA suddenly can be what leads them to discover they have type 1 in the first place.
Sometimes, there is not always a clear trigger for DKA which can be worrying and confusing. But if you suspect you or your child has DKA it’s important to get medical help right away.

Blood sugar provides energy to the body’s cells, but too much can be harmful. If a person notices that they are urinating more often or feel unusually thirsty, they may have high blood sugar, also known as hyperglycemia.
The liver and muscles produce some sugar in the blood, but most of it comes from food and drinks that contain carbohydrates.
The body needs insulin to keep blood sugar levels within a normal range. Insulin is a hormone that directs the body’s cells to take up glucose and store it.
Symptoms Of High Blood Sugar (hyperglycemia)
If there is not enough insulin or it does not work properly, blood sugar rises. High blood sugar levels can cause health concerns.
This article explores what hyperglycemia feels like, why it happens, and the symptoms of high blood sugar. Read on to find out more
Hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar, is an issue that can affect people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
Having high blood sugar levels consistently or over a long period of time can cause a number of negative symptoms and increase the risk of serious complications over time.

Test kits for blood sugar levels and ketone levels are available for purchase online for home use.
Over time, high blood sugar can damage the body’s organs and systems. Blood vessel damage can lead to complications.
High blood sugar and low insulin can lead to an increase in ketones and the possibility of diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious problem that requires immediate medical attention.
In type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. As a result, the body lacks insulin, and blood sugar levels rise.
Hypoglycemia Management: Causes, Treatmnet And Prevention
People with type 1 diabetes must take insulin with a needle, pen, or insulin pump to keep their blood sugar levels at a target level.
In type 2 diabetes, the body produces insulin but cannot use it well. The pancreas tries to make more of the hormone but often can’t do enough to maintain blood sugar levels. This is called insulin resistance.
People with type 2 diabetes may need insulin, pills, dietary changes, or exercise to help manage blood sugar levels.
Gestational diabetes can occur when insulin resistance and high blood sugar levels develop during pregnancy. People should be aware of this during pregnancy, because it can lead to problems for the pregnant woman and their baby. Gestational diabetes usually goes away after delivery.

The Pediatric Diabetes Research Foundation says there is nothing a person can do to prevent type 1 diabetes. Diet, exercise, or other lifestyle choices will not change the results.

They may need regular checkups to keep these at a healthy level. Everyone is different, and levels can vary from person to person.
What Are The Warning Signs Of Prediabetes?
To determine blood sugar levels, a person may need to fast for 8 hours, 2 hours after a meal, or both.
Some people may also take a glucose tolerance test, where they drink a sugary liquid and have their blood tested.
The American Diabetes Association recommends a blood sugar level of 80-130 mg/dL. About 1-2 hours after starting the meal, their blood sugar should be less than 180 mg/dL.

Monitoring Blood Sugar Levels For A Child With Type 1 Diabetes
People with type 1 diabetes will need to take insulin as recommended by their doctor, usually several times a day.
Those with type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes may need to change their diet and exercise habits. They may also need to take oral medications or insulin.

It can also be a side effect of diabetes medication. Taking too much insulin can cause low blood sugar levels.
What Is Hypoglycemia? Diabetes And Risk Of Too Low Blood Sugar
A person can treat hypoglycemia quickly by drinking fruit juice or eating glucose tablets, sugar cubes, or candy.
Anyone with frequent episodes of low blood sugar should talk to a doctor. A healthcare professional may recommend a change in the type or dosage of the medication.
