The mismanagement of plastic waste has polluted the entire marine environment, from the coast to the deepest ocean sediments (e.g. Ryan et al. 2016; Woodall et al. 2014). Almost all marine species can become entangled in or ingest plastic, depending on their size, and ingestion can expose them to dangerous additives or associated pathogens in the plastic (Prinz and Korez 2020). Plastic waste can be a host for many species, resulting in rafting or long-distance transport of species by floating plastic. This potentially increases the species’ geographic range and spreads invasive species and diseases (Zettler et al. 2013; Keswani et al. 2016; Lamb et al. 2018; Rodrigues et al. 2019).

Our planet can no longer tolerate the culture of throwing away plastic. For too long, corporations have put the onus on all of us to deal with their own failed design problems.

The flow of plastic into our environment has reached crisis proportions, and the evidence is most clearly displayed in our oceans. It is estimated that 12 million metric tons of plastic enter our oceans every year.

Our oceans are slowly turning into plastic soup and the effects on sea life are chilling Discarded plastic fishing lines trap turtles and seabirds, and pieces of plastic of all sizes choke the stomachs of animals who mistake it for food, from tiny zooplankton to whales. Plastic is now entering every level of the ocean food chain and even ending up on seafood on our plates.

Gulp, It’s Plastic: It’s Choking The Environment As You Gasp For Life

Our planet can no longer tolerate the culture of throwing away plastic. Single-use plastics are filling our landfills, choking our rivers and polluting our oceans. For too long, corporations have put the onus on all of us to deal with their own failed design problems. We are told that individuals only need to recycle the billions of tons of plastic corporations are making and that will make the difference we need to sustain our planet.

More than 90% of plastic is not recycled. Recycling alone is not going to solve this problem. The scale of the problem that corporations have created must be met with a fundamental change in how they bring products to people. Telling these corporate giants that we will no longer tolerate the plastic they impose on us – it’s up to all of us to demand better. Our world deserves better, and we don’t need their products if they refuse to adapt.

It’s time to reject our old corporate story that throwaway lifestyles make us happy. Nothing used for a few minutes should pollute our oceans for life.

Under considerable pressure from our supporters and allies around the world, the biggest companies like Coke, Pepsi, Starbucks, McDonald’s, Unilever, Nestlé and Procter & Gamble will adopt better models through innovation and redesign. They will reject old stories, and reinvent how to produce and deliver products in a way that respects our oceans and our planet.

Together, we can do better. We can come up with a simpler life without limitless waste — a life where people and the planet thrive. Big companies claim their role in ending plastic pollution!

In this, we think industry plays a bigger role than individuals. Why is it that something intended to be used for a few minutes is packaged that lasts forever? We demand that corporations take responsibility for the plastic pollution crisis and end the use of destructive single-use plastics and packaging. They created this mess and they need to be held accountable. Here are steps you can take now to stop plastic pollution:

Addressing the scale of the plastic pollution crisis before us is going to take both small and large commitments, and we all need to play our part. Every step to reduce single-use plastics sends a message to the industry that it’s time to change. Sign our petition demanding the CEOs of seven of the largest producers of single-use plastics take responsibility for their products.
