Cellulite is the result of loose skin being pulled down in pockets of fat into deeper layers of skin with connective tissue fibers. Your DNA really predetermines if and how you will develop cellulite.

Cellulite is caused by a combination of connective tissue worsening leading to the loss of elasticity of connective fibers in the skin (skin laxity), water retention and bulging of subcutaneous fat. Water retention, increased subcutaneous fat and loss of skin elasticity are the end result of increased age, higher body fat percentage, skin thickness and your genes.

Cellulite occurs in all body types and both men and women but is more dominant in women.

As women age, their estrogen production decreases especially when they approach menopause, thus causing a decrease in blood flow to the skin and more specifically connective tissue. Lack of blood flow leads to less oxygen which results in reduced collagen production. Weak connective tissue fibers (subdermal fibrous tissue) allow fat deposits to protrude creating an uneven dimpled effect. Areas that are particularly prone to the condition are the thighs and posterior buttocks. With increasing age, the skin thins and becomes less elastic, increasing the appearance of cellulite.

Ethnicity and genetics have determined a person’s metabolic rate and fat distribution, which will determine the level of cellulite.
