Doctors often test for chronic inflammation by testing levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), which increases when the body is in an inflammatory state.

Chronic inflammation is linked to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, fibromyalgia, GERD and depression. When chronic inflammation becomes a serious problem, it stops your body from working, and it can also contribute to other problems.

“You don’t have to suddenly switch to a new eating style, start small, focus on one behavior and food change at a time and make this diet a part of your lifestyle,” says Caitlin Cusack.

What does an anti-inflammatory diet do? Your immune system is activated when your body recognizes something foreign, such as an invading microbe, plant pollen, or chemical. This usually triggers a process called inflammation. Anti-inflammation attacks directed at real threat attackers protect you.

However, sometimes inflammation persists, day in and day out, even when you are not threatened by foreign invaders. Then inflammation can become your enemy. Many of the major diseases that plague us — including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, depression, and Alzheimer’s — are linked to chronic inflammation.

The most powerful tool to combat inflammation is not from the pharmacy, but from the grocery store. “Many experimental studies have shown that components of foods or beverages can have anti-inflammatory effects,” said Dr. Frank Hu says.

Choose the right anti-inflammatory foods, and you will be able to reduce your risk of illness. Constantly choose the wrong one, and you can speed up the inflammatory process.

The same foods in the anti-inflammatory diet are often considered bad for us, including sodas and refined carbohydrates, as well as red meat and processed meats.

“Certain foods associated with increased risk for chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease are associated with excess inflammation,” says Dr. Hu says. “This is not surprising, because inflammation is an important underlying mechanism for the development of these diseases.”

Uny foods also contribute to weight gain, which is a risk factor for inflammation. Yet in several studies, even after researchers took obesity into account, the link between diet and inflammation remained, suggesting that weight gain was not the only driver. “Certain dietary components or substances may have independent effects on inflammation over increased caloric intake,” Dr. Hu says.

On the flip side, drinks and foods that reduce inflammation, and with it, chronic disease, Dr. Hu says. They note that certain fruits and vegetables, such as blueberries, apples and leafy greens, are high in natural antioxidants and polyphenols — protective compounds found in plants.

Studies have associated seeds with lower markers of inflammation and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Coffee, which contains polyphenols and other anti-inflammatory compounds, protects against inflammation.

To lower inflammation levels, aim for an overall y diet. If you’re looking for an eating plan that closely follows the principles of an anti-inflammatory diet, consider the Mediterranean diet, which is high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, fish, and healthy oils.

In addition to reducing inflammation, a more natural, less processed diet can have significant effects on your physical and emotional health. “A Y diet is beneficial not only for reducing the risk of chronic diseases, but also for improving mood and overall quality of life,” says Dr. Hu says.
