“A 54-year-old man, after returning from a trip to Southeast Asia where he spent his two-week vacation (6-8 hours a day) sunbathing, had elevated creatinine levels, indicating kidney damage or dysfunction. Dr. Bourne Auguste of the University of Toronto and the Toronto General said co-authors from the hospital and the University of Toronto.
What Is Vitamin D?
“After consultation with a nephrologist and further testing, he was found to have prescribed high doses of vitamin D by a naturopath who recommended a dosage of 8 drops daily.”
Over 2.5 years, a patient with no history of osteoporosis or vitamin D deficiency took 8-12 drops of vitamin D per day, totaling 8,000-12,000 IU.
As a result, he had high levels of calcium in the blood, which left him with significant kidney damage.
“Although vitamin D toxicity is rare due to its large therapeutic range, its widespread availability in various over-the-counter formulations poses a significant risk to uninformed patients,” says Dr. Auguste.

The recommended daily allowance is 400-1,000 IU, 800-2,000 IU is recommended for adults and elderly people at high risk of osteoporosis.
“Our experience tells us that patients and physicians should be better informed about the risks of unlimited use of vitamin D,” the researchers concluded.

Vitamin D is a nutrient that helps the body absorb and regulate calcium in the blood. So when a person has too much, it can lead to dangerously high levels of blood calcium, a condition known as hypercalcemia.
Vitamin D toxicity is rare and often goes undiagnosed, according to Kathryn Ross, professor of nutrition and physiology and head of nutritional sciences at Pennsylvania State University. Here’s how to spot vitamin D toxicity and what to do about it.
Symptoms of vitamin D toxicity are directly related to excess calcium in the blood, which can cause nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, frequent urination, weakness, and bone pain.
Over time, excess calcium forms deposits in the arteries and soft tissues rather than in the bones. Ultimately, it can cause kidney stones and contribute to heart damage.
Vitamin D: A Powerhouse Nutrient
“This is a major effect of acute vitamin D toxicity, and it occurs slowly in people who have had high vitamin D intake for years,” says Paul Price, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Molecular Biology at the University of California, San Diego.
To diagnose vitamin D toxicity, a doctor performs a blood test that shows how much calcium is in the blood. If a person has vitamin D toxicity, then calcium levels are abnormally high.
Ross notes that long-term, sustained high levels of vitamin D may not have obvious short-term toxicity, but may contribute to an increased risk of common symptoms.
If a person shows signs of vitamin D toxicity, the first step in treating it is to immediately stop taking any and all vitamin D and calcium supplements, as well as reduce the intake of vitamin D-rich foods such as salmon and cod liver oil.

You may also be prescribed bone resorption inhibitors. These drugs are commonly used to treat osteoporosis because they block the release of calcium into the bloodstream. However, Price’s research has shown that bone resorption inhibitors may also prevent acute episodes of vitamin D toxicity.
These inhibitors could be useful to prevent calcification of soft tissue in patients who cannot reduce vitamin D intake for health reasons, he said.
But for most people, the answer is to stop taking your supplements, which will allow your body to process the excess calcium and return to normal over weeks or months.

Vitamin D Deficiency: Causes, Symptoms, And Treatment
Our bodies get vitamin D in two ways: from sunlight and from certain foods. According to the National Institutes of Health, how much you need depends on your age. For example, older adults need less than those over 70, who produce less vitamin D through their skin.
The National Institutes of Health recommends that most adults need 600 international units (IU) daily to meet their basic needs for bone health. However, for overall health, it’s best to get anywhere between 600 IU to 4,000 IU per day.
Vegetarians and vegans can look to almond milk and mushrooms, but fish is a great way to cover your bases. Three ounces of fatty fish like salmon or one cup of portobello mushrooms will meet your daily vitamin D needs.
If you take the maximum recommended amount — 4,000 IU — occasionally, it won’t harm you, Ross says. But if you consistently reach or exceed this limit for months or years, it can lead to toxic symptoms.

Ross says it’s hard to quantify the amount of vitamin D your skin produces through sunlight, but in general, it’s the supplements — not the sunlight — that tip the scales toward toxicity.
If you’ve had a severe sunburn, for example, you should be more concerned about skin damage than vitamin D toxicity. Moreover, vitamin D deficiency is more of a concern than toxicity.
This is especially true for children, who can develop rickets if vitamin D-deficient, leading to soft and poorly developed bones. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends supplements for infants who are not getting enough vitamin D through breast-feeding or formula.
Ultimately, your doctor will tell you whether you should consider a supplement, based on your age, your lifestyle, and other factors.
How Much Vitamin D Should You Take? That Depends On You
Between 2006 and 2014, the number of people taking 4,000 IUs daily increased from less than 0.5% to 3%. That’s according to a 2017 study in the Journal of American Medicine that collected data from 39,000 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
During the same period, those taking more than 1,000 IU per day increased from less than 1% to 18%, the study found. This amount is not known to cause immediate health problems, but research suggests that more people than ever are looking for extra vitamin D and are at risk of overdosing.
This does not mean that no one should take a vitamin D supplement. Other than infants and those over 70 who need supplements, people should have their blood levels checked regularly to determine if supplements are indicated.
If you decide you’re interested in taking a vitamin D supplement, read the label, buy from a reputable brand, and make sure the product has been third-party tested for safety and potency. Supplements are only regulated by the Food and Drug Administration.
